It is often found necessary to modify ships to suit changing trade requirements, or financially beneficial to modernize an old vessel. Over the years, Graham & Woolnough has undertaken hundreds of designs for modification, and supervised the work.

Mersey Ferries Royal Daffodil & Royal Iris Modernizaton

Typical of this work is the recent refurbishment of the TSMV “Royal Daffodil” for Mersey Ferries Ltd. The ship was originally designed by Cammell Laird & Co. in Birkenhead in 1962.

The refurbishment included fitting a modern propulsion machinery package, a new electrical system, and refurbishing the passenger saloons. The vessel was upgraded from Passenger Ship Class V to Class III allowing her operating area to be increased.

The images below illustrate a recent ship conversion carried out to designs and supervision.  The TSMV “Royal Iris” was originally designed by Graham & Woolnough and built by Phillip and Sons of Dartmouth in 1959 for the Corporation of Birkenhead Ferries.

The refurbishment involved replacement of a large amount of steel, the creation of new passenger saloons, and the installation of new propulsion machinery. The old electrical installation was stripped out of the vessel in its entirety, a completely new modern system installed. Additional navigation equipment and modern control systems have been provided so the ships life expectancy has been extended for many years.
