The technical staff of Graham & Woolnough have given oral evidence as expert witnesses at trials and arbitration in relation to marine casualties. Over the past 20 years, the Company has been asked to investigate some 60 cases, combining its experience with specialised computer programs to make a quick and efficient response to P and I Clubs, shipowners and their legal representatives.

The cases considered by Graham & Woolnough
have varied from assessment of fuel consumption of vessels on charter,
to the cause of loss of containers from the side of a ship and resultant
damage and machinery failures. In one case the Partners investigated
the sinking of a Ro/Ro vessel in Port alongside the quay, due to ingress
of water onto the vehicle deck as a result of the bow door being left
open when the vessel was discharging. In many of these cases the Company was required to carry out detailed investigations and Calculations into the longitudinal strength of ships, and into the strength of individual structure elements, the effect of flooding into the ship including damage stability, together with the intact stability of the ship under various conditions of loading. Staff travel abroad to casualties as required. Surveys are then carried out on-board the vessels, and detailed reports with photographs are prepared to support the investigations. |
